The Solar and Battery Rebates aren’t disappearing just yet, but.....

For the past few years, solar and battery rebates have helped thousands of Australian households reduce the upfront cost of installing solar and battery systems. For many families, it’s been the difference between wanting solar and battery “one day” and actually making it happen!

What a lot of people don’t realise, though, is that these rebate programs aren’t fixed forever. They come and go depending on a lot of things like what is happening in the wider energy world, government policy, market conditions, industry demand, and more.

The current federal STC (Small-scale Technology Certificate) rebate scheme will continue to reduce gradually over time before ending in 2030. Since the program began, the rebate value for solar systems has already reduced through annual step-downs. Equally, battery rebates and incentives are also subject to change independently, depending on government policy and available programs. In layman's terms, this means the level of support available to homeowners can shift over time rather than remain fixed indefinitely.

Of course, that doesn’t mean people should panic, but instead it means carefully considering your options and planning ahead that matters.

Most of our recent conversations have been with homeowners who assumed just that, that the rebate would always be there at the same level, only to realise that system costs, demand spikes, installer availability, and product shortages can all affect what’s realistically achievable when they’re finally ready to move forward.

Don’t take our word for it, historically, we’ve seen this happen before. Whenever major rebate changes or energy price increases are announced, demand across the industry rises quickly. That can lead to longer wait times, limited stock availability on certain products, and rushed decision-making from customers trying to “beat the deadline.”

We don’t believe that’s the best way to approach something as important as your home energy system.  Solar and battery systems should be planned properly. Your usage and goals should be considered and understood and the final system decision should suit your household long-term, not just whatever happens to be available during a rush period.

That’s why our advice to customers is simple:

Understand your position early, now. Even if you’re not planning to install immediately, it’s worth understanding:

  • what rebates you currently qualify for,
  • how future rebate reductions may affect you,
  • whether your switchboard or home setup may need upgrades,
  • and what system options actually make sense for your energy usage and future plans.

For some households, acting sooner may make financial sense but for others, it may simply help them plan properly and avoid pressure later.  Either way, knowledge, as we all know is valuable.

One of the biggest misconceptions we also see out there is that that “waiting” always saves money because technology improves over time. While, to some point this is accurate,, technology certainly continues to evolve however a the same time rebate reductions, electricity price increases, installation demand, and supply chain pressures can significantly outweigh those gains.  Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and there shouldn’t be. We’re all individual and any decision in life needs to fit within our own individual needs.

No one wants to make decisions driven by fear or urgency. That’s why this conversation isn’t about “don’t miss out,” instead it’s about helping people understand the landscape early enough to make calm, informed choices for their home and family.
