With the air con working overtime (especially over summer!), a hot water system that’s seen better days, and the never ending rising electricity prices, it’s fair to say most families are dreading the monthly electricity bill impact.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Governments are beginning to pay attention and recognise that reducing energy costs isn't just about asking people to use less electricity, but also about helping households access the technology and upgrades that make a genuine difference to the everyday Aussie. 

That’s the line of thinking behind the NSW Government's new Home Energy Saver Program, an initiative designed purely to help eligible households invest in energy-saving improvements that may otherwise remain on the "one day" list.

 

Why This Matters

For years, we've seen homeowners become increasingly interested in reducing their energy costs, not just through solar, but through smarter homes overall. Families are asking better questions, like “ Should we replace our old hot water system? Would insulation make a difference? Is a battery worth considering?”

But sadly the challenge isn’t about the question or seeing the need; it’s that while these upgrades often save money over the long term, the upfront investment can make them feel impossible to prioritise. That's why these programs can play such an important role in our households. 

By reducing some of the financial barriers, households can make improvements sooner rather than later and make enjoying the benefits a closer reality, too.

 

What Can the Program Be Used For?

One of the strengths of the Home Energy Saver Program is that it isn't just focused on a single solution; instead, it recognises that every home is different (something we understand very well at First Choice Solar!). For many households, rooftop solar delivers the greatest benefit, but for others, it could be adding a battery, replacing a hot water system or improving insulation and draught-proofing.

The program sees the unique needs of Australians and covers a broad range of eligible energy-saving improvements, including rooftop solar systems, residential batteries, switchboard upgrades, heat-pump and solar hot water systems, reverse-cycle air conditioners, induction cooktops, Level 2 EV chargers, DC ceiling fans, ceiling insulation, draught-proofing, double glazing and NatHERS home energy assessments.

Of course, that doesn’t mean every home needs every upgrade. It simply gives households more options to consider based on where their home may be losing energy, what they’re currently spending and what they hope to achieve.

 

So, How Does It Work?

Well, in simple terms, the Home Energy Saver Program provides (or will provide) two different types of financial support to eligible NSW households; zero interest loans and discounts!  

Applications are already open for zero-interest loans of up to $15,000. These unique loans can be repaid over a period of up to 10 years with zero interest and are available to eligible NSW homeowners and landlords who are Australian citizens or permanent residents and have a combined annual taxable household income of up to $210,000. As is the case for all lending in Australia, applications remain subject to the provider’s eligibility requirements, credit assessment and lending criteria.

A separate discount of up to $4,000 is also coming up for eligible homeowners and renters with a combined annual household income of up to $80,000 or an eligible concession card. Applications for this discount are not yet open (as of July 2026) but watcht this space. 

Some households may be eligible for both forms of support and if you believe you may qualify for the incoming discount, the NSW Government recommends waiting until discount applications open and applying for the discount first. Basically because if you take out a loan now (before the discount), you won’t later be able to apply the discount to that same purchase later.

 

More Than Just Nicer Bills

For most people, reducing the electricity costs is the primary goal, but, when we look at it more broadly, the benefits of a more energy-efficient home extend far beyond the bill. A well-insulated home is generally more comfortable throughout the year. Efficient heating and cooling systems can maintain temperatures with less energy. Solar and batteries can provide greater control over when and how electricity is used. Collectively, these improvements can create homes that are not only cheaper to run, but also more enjoyable to live in. What’s not to like about that.

 

A Changing Trend

Perhaps the most interesting part of programs like this is what we learn about where our Australia is heading. A decade ago, most energy conversations focused on generation yet, today, the conversation is so much bigger. It's no longer just about producing power, but creating smarter homes that work better for the people living in them.The NSW Home Energy Saver Program is helping more households access technologies and upgrades that can deliver lasting benefits for years to come.  And in a time when every household is looking for ways to stretch their budget and cut costs, that's a conversation worth having.
